Yes, seems workers digging at the site of PAUL REVERE’S house…in Boston’s North End…believe they may have found an archaeological goldmine, that could give them a unique window into history: Paul Revere’s OUTHOUSE.
That’s right, the possible privy site was discovered Monday, and City Archaeologist Joe Bagley says that a find like this is important because people back in the Colonial Era threw a lot of stuff into their privies–stuff that could give insight into their lives.
Says Bagley: “They’d fill it up with ‘you-know-what’, but also with their household waste–and from that we can get clues as to what they were eating, and what their health was like…and also find many valuable artifacts.
“We love finding outhouses,” Bagley says, “And we think we’ve found Paul Revere’s.”
[Editor’s note: Historians speculate that Paul Revere was careful to use the outhouse, too–before he began his famous ride–so he wouldn’t have to stop along the way. (And they also say that the actual signal that the British were coming was: “Number one, if by land. Number two, if by sea.”)]
