Seems in one of the most hostile regions on earth, conservationists for the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust have just unearthed a century-old, ice-covered FRUITCAKE they believe once belonged to British explorer Robert Falcon Scott.
Yes, the fruitcake–most likely dating back 106 years, to Scott’s “Terra Nova” expedition (1910-1913)–was found in Antarctica’s oldest building, which was built by a Norwegian explorer’s team in 1899.
And get this: according to Trust, the dessert was found wrapped in paper–and in its original tin container–and actually appeared to be–and smelled–completely EDIBLE!
[Editor’s note: Imagine, after 106 years, a fruitcake that had finally become edible.]
