Does Food Tastes Better If You Grow It Yourself?

If someone told me a year ago that I’d have a garden in my backyard – I would have laughed in there face. Gardening ain’t my thang.  I do not have a green thumb…AT ALL.

Well, it’s been over three months since The Princess and I planted a garden. We water it – pull a weed now and again. Ever morning I rush out to see if something has sprouted or is flowering. I do the same thing after work.  I’m a bit obsessed.  We’ve planted loads of fruit and veg and we’re starting to see the fruits of our labor.  We’re eating cucumbers, beans, strawberries, potatoes, 3 kinds of peppers, corn and ground cherries.  The neighbors have started pulling their shades and turning the lights off when they see us coming because we keep stopping by with cherry tomatoes.  We’ve grown enough to feed a small army.

But the one thing that I want to grow the most refuses to bear fruit…UNTIL NOW!

We finally have a WATERMELON!

It’s the size of a golf ball but it’s getting bigger every day.  I’m trying to figure out what to do with it when it’s ready.  Maybe we’ll cut a hole in it and infuse it with a bottle of Stoli – and throw a big bash. Or turn it into Watermelon Margaritas. Truth is we’ll probably just eat it.

I used to hate gardening as a kid.  My parents had a huge garden – and I associated it with work.  It is hard work and it probably cost us more than just going to the store and buying the produce.  But there is something very rewarding about eating something that you raised from tiny little seed.

That being said – I’ve got big plans for this garden next year.  I’m already mapping out my crops!
