Do You Tip a Bathroom Attendant?

So we were at a fancy place in San Francisco and I went to the Men’s room.  I did my business – wash my hands – and as I reach for a paper towel a Bathroom Attendant

swoops in and hands one to me.  I hesitantly take the paper towel.  It felt strange to do because I’m mere inches from the stack sitting on the counter.  I could’ve easily helped myself.  That’s when I notice a TIP BOWL sitting on the counter.

This is a sham, right?

When he held the paper towel out to me – I felt obligated to take it…so now this chap wants paid.  I thought to myself,  “No way!  There is no way I’m giving a dime to this dude!”  Then I see other people tossing change and bills into the bowl.  So i turned walked toward the door…then got my wallet out and threw a dollar in that bowl.

I know. I know…What a schmuck!

Again, I felt obligated because others were doing it.  And don’t say, “Well, his job is to keep the restrooms clean for you!” Whatever!! That’s the job he’s chosen – and I’m sure he earns a wage for that. Also – he’s not cleaning up after me – my aim is impeccable – and I don’t leave paper towels on the counter or the floor.

So I have to know – Do you TIP a Bathroom Attendant?  How much do you have to tip for a service like that?
