The More Embarrassing The Street Name, The Cheaper The House

Want to get yourself a good house for CHEAP?  Just find one on a street like BUTT ROAD in Fort Wayne, Indiana…or CROTCH CRESCENT, in New Portland, Maine…or MOAN AND GROAN ROAD, in Hope, New York…or DUTCH OVEN ROAD, in Salem. Oregon.

Yes, according to a new study, houses on streets with EMBARRASSING names sell for less than similar houses on streets with normal names.  Researchers in Australia say they analyzed 47 years of property records, and found that houses on embarrassing streets sold for an average of 20% BELOW their market value.  And that’s pretty significant…you’d get $100,000 off on a $500,000 house.

The study also found that 33% of people say they absolutely would NOT live on a street with a funny or “dubious” name.

[Editor’s note: Which means I should get quite a deal on that house I’ve been looking at…on Wiener Cutoff Road, in Wiener, Arkansas.   (And yes folks, that one’s real, too.)]
